About KeepAlamedaFlat

Keep Alameda Flat is a group of concerned citizens and fans of the Island City, who have joined forces to defeat Measure Q, the proposal to develop Alameda Point as a ski resort and conference center. The measure, which has the backing of the planning department and several prominent figures in local government, was inspired by the proposal to construct an aerial gondola connecting Alameda Point with the West Oakland Bart station and the Port of Oakland’s perpetual need to deepen its shipping channels to maintain it’s standing as one of the busiest container ports in the country. Working with the Army Corp of Engineers and the Port, developer, SunCal intends to erect a four thousand foot mountain out fill dredged from harbor that will feature five ski runs sloping down to San Francisco Bay.

We at KAF feel that Measure Q must be stopped. Despite a favorable environmental impact report and plans to mitigate the harm done to the habitat of the least tern by recreating their nesting site on the abandoned Navy runways among the salt marshes of the South Bay, we believe that the project is impractical and will prove to be far more expensive than its seven billion dollar projected cost. We feel that naming the resort Mount Corica is a cynical attempt to appease those of us with deep roots and strong feelings about our city, and we don’t think Chuck would support it. Above all, we feel that the influx of traffic and tourists produced by Measure Q would destroy the priceless, small town charm that makes living in Alameda so special.
